What can a Death Doula do for you?

End-of-life statistics:

According to the National End Of Life Doula Alliance:

  • Death is the #1 fear in the world
  • The #1 fear of the dying patient is being a burden to loved ones
  • 9/10 people say they want to be cared for at home if they became terminally ill
  • 98% of the care for those at the end of life is received by the primary caregiver even with hospice care. This person is typically a family member

According to the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association:

  • 1 out of 4 of these caregivers are seniors
  • Of the 270,000 Canadians who die each year, 90% die of chronic illness, such as cancer, heart disease, organ failure, dementia or frailty
  • In Canada, there are 88 residential hospices
  • When community support is insufficient, many Canadians must rely on hospitals for palliative care. At Least some patients and their families associated hospital deaths with more distress.

What does this mean?

These statistics show spaces between a person at the end of life, the caregiver and the care team. This is referred to as “the hospice gap” and this is where death doulas come in. We are an addition to the care team. We bridge these gaps by easing fears surrounding death and dying while bringing peace and dignity to those navigating the end of life journey.

About Life & Death Doula Hayley

I am a full spectrum holistic non-medical end of life practitioner for both people and pets. A certified energy and death worker is what I often refer to myself due to my wide range of offerings. I work closely with the primary caregiver to make sure they understand how to take care of their loved one (if they have the supplies they need, how to contact hospice, making sure they have someone to talk to, etc). I empower people to contemplate what a good death looks like for them and then advocate for those wishes. I work as a consistent, continuous guide for one end-of-life client and their loved ones at a time to ensure they receive the compassionate, emotional and informational support for the duration of that journey.

*** Please note: I do not offer mental health, medical or legal advice as I am a non-medically trained professional ***
